There is a girl somewhere in Lagos right now, walking to school in a uniform two sizes too big, bought big on purpose, so it lasts a little longer. She’s carrying more than books. She’s carrying the hope of everyone who ever told her “you can be anything,” and the quiet fear that the money might run out before her dreams do.
Multiply that girl by millions, and you start to understand why the world set aside a day just for her.
A Day, A Theme, A Choice
Every October 11th, the world observes the International Day of the Girl Child, a reminder that a girl’s right to learn, grow, and lead is not automatic. It has to be protected. It has to be funded. It has to be *chosen*, again and again, by families, communities, and institutions.
This year, IA-Foundation is bringing that choice home with our theme: **Investing in the Girl Child.
Not “celebrating.” Not “appreciating.” *Investing.* Because a girl’s future is not charity it’s the highest-yield investment a nation can make. Educate a girl, and you don’t just change one life. You change the trajectory of a household, a community, a generation not yet born.
Why This Hits Different in Nigeria
For too many girls in Nigeria, school is the first thing to go when money gets tight, when a family needs an extra pair of hands at home, or when early marriage looks like the “safer” option. The numbers are sobering Nigeria carries one of the highest out-of-school populations in the world, and girls bear a disproportionate share of that burden.
But numbers do not tell you about Aisha, who walks two hours to sit an exam. Or Blessing, who does her homework by phone torchlight because there is no electricity at home. These aren’t statistics. They’re the reason IA-Foundation exists to get out-of-school children, especially girls, back into classrooms where they belong.

It’s easy to post a heart emoji on October 11th and move on. It’s harder, and far more meaningful to sit in on a conversation, ask a question, share a resource, or simply be counted among those who said “I was there.”
